Shooting 3's for the 33 percent

Hi Family and Friends!

I’m fundraising for Emilia Clarke's charity, SameYou, which is working to develop better recovery treatment for survivors of brain injury and stroke.

This month is their 33 for ABI in July challenge to support the 33% of people who are affected by brain injury in their lifetime. To support SameYou, I’ve committed to shooting 33 3-point shots each day throughout July.

Why am I doing this? Well, as many of you know, I suffered a traumatic brain injury during a basketball game in my sophomore year of high school when I was charged and my head slammed into the hardwood court. You can see it here (not for the faint-hearted!): https://youtu.be/5EIIJD-iRds?t=3

I was diagnosed with a level 3 severe concussion, but neither my family nor I knew what to expect. In fact, I missed six weeks of school and struggled to do even the simplest tasks.

It has been almost 1.5 years since my injury, and I now know so much more about what it means to live with a brain injury: missing countless tests, stopping sports, constantly communicating with doctors and teachers, and negotiating academic accommodations, etc. This past year I have received so much support and knowledge, and I now want to help others in their recovery process!

I would be so grateful for your support of either a one-off donation or a pledge per basket made. One-off donations are made right now or you can choose to pledge a donation instead, which means your donation is processed at the end of my challenge, keeping me motivated to achieve my goals!

Also, I created a Coda doc with resources to help students manage their brain injury recovery process including a Health Log, Academic Tracker, Email Templates, Glossary and other helpful resources. You can find it here: bit.ly/concussiondocument

To my American family and friends, please know that while SameYou is based in the UK it is also a registered 501c(3) registered charity in Delaware USA (EIN – 81-3931169). Also, take note that 1 Pound sterling = 1.4 US Dollars.

I made 20 out of 33 three-pointers today. For the final day, I rebounded for myself. This is because during the brain injury recovery process, you are the most important person in helping yourself rebound from said injury.
Shout out to Genie and Euan as well as Lili and Frank for their generous donations which brings me to an amazing grand total of £4,403.60 ($6123.20) this month. I am finishing this campaign at 88% of my updated goal of £5,000 and at a whopping 132% of my original goal of £3,333 ($4634.53)!
I can't thank everyone who supported me through donations or rebounding enough! I am so grateful to have about 100 people assisting me in helping those in the 33%. What we accomplished together this July is truly remarkable!"

Made 22 out 33 three-pointers today. Another record! Thanks to my buddy Jared for helping me rebound. He is a Day 1 friend!
Another way to support the charity is by purchasing merch. Like the cool hoodie I am wearing with a hummngbird -- which does amazing things despite its small size!
Thanks to the Tan Family for their generous donation which gives me a good start towards my new goal of £5,000.

Made 16 of 33 three-pointers today, in my flip-flops.  Thanks to my Dad for helping me rebound. He'll get a break starting tomorrow.
I am very excited that I have matched Steph Curry's record of 402 three-pointers in a season -- and I did it in a lot less time than he did! Thanks to Dion and Anonymous for their generous donations for hitting this milestone!"

"Thanks to everyone for helping me hit my goal of £3,333. It's hard to believe. I remember when I had just £56 not too long ago.
With exactly one week left, I still want to do more for SameYou and so I am setting a new goal of £5,000."

Thank you everyone for getting me past my goal (donations and pledges are now £4,304.09 - 129.1% of goal). I am looking good for passing Steph, earning most of those pledges, and raising more than my original target of £3,333.
Big shout to my mentor, Scott, who just made a huge pledge... £1,000! Thank you for your incredible generosity!!!"

Made 18 out of 33 three-pointers today. Thanks to my Dad again for helping me rebound. I wore a T-shirt from Cookiebar Creamery, one of my favorite ice cream shops. Sugar is for celebrations in our family and making progress in your recovery is something worth celebrating. Time for some salted caramel!
Thanks to The Chin Family for their generous donation to get me to 99.1% (donations and pledges) of my goal!"

Set a new record with 21 out of 33 three-pointers made!

Thanks to my Uncle Bill (not my actual Uncle -- in Chinese culture we refer to family friends as aunts and uncles) for helping me rebound. He's more used to providing support on ski slopes, but made the switch to basketball just for me.

Thanks to The Cho Family, The Kaneshiros and The Matsuokas for your generous donations which have brought me to 94.6% of my goal of raising £3333 for SameYou's neuro recovery work."

Made 16 out of 33 three-pointers with two friends, Shane and Max, helping me rebound. Afterwards, we went to see Marvel's Black Widow movie. We have seen every Marvel movie together since we were in middle school. Spending time with friends is so important to the recovery process to keep your spirits up and maintain a sense that things are still the same.
Thanks to Tony and Selene Lee for their generous donations, edging me to 89.8% of my goal (donations and pledges combined)."

Made 12 out of 33 three-pointers today. My friend Kai helped me rebound today, just as he has done over the last year. Good friends are key to recovering because they can support you socially. (Get a break from your parents)
Thanks to Glen & Helen Young for their generous donation which brings me to 87.6% of my goal! "

Thanks to my newest donors: Meher Gourjian and Daric & Amy Wong who have helped me reach 86.6% of my £3333 goal."

The Charity

SAMEYOU logo

SameYou represents the needs of people recovering from brain injury and stroke to help provide better holistic rehabilitation care

It's estimated that nearly 1 in 3 people will have an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) at some point in their life. You will know someone with a brain injury at some point, and they will not receive the care they need.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) identifies rehabilitation as a substantial and ever-increasing unmet global need - but it's not an integrated part of health services. Neurorehabilitation is among the most neglected and underfunded.

We're asking you to commit to completing 33 minutes of activity every day, or committing to complete 33 your way, throughout July.
This could be 33 steps, for someone early in recovery, 33 cakes to bake, or even 33 conversations about the effects of ABIs (Acquired Brain Injury) and fundraise for SameYou on the 33 for ABI in July challenge to support the 33% of people who are affected by brain injury in their lifetime.
