Doctors of the World UK fights to reduce global health inequalities by improving access to healthcare. We believe access to healthcare is a human right, however all too often it is denied to the most vulnerable people in society. Poor health is linked to social and economic disadvantage. We see this every day at our London clinic, in Bethnal Green, where (in 2014) over 70% of patients were living in poverty, 44% had experienced violence and over 30% lived in unstable accommodation. But health inequalities are preventable.
We are a part of the global Médecins du Monde network, which delivers healthcare projects in over 70 countries through 3,000 volunteer medics. We focus on long-term changes, rather than quick fixes, and at the heart of the organization is a pioneering spirit. From the very first anonymous HIV testing centre in Paris to our innovative London clinic, which turns 10-years old in 2016, we believe in doing things differently.
