Welcome to the first ever Dorothy House virtual Big Breakfast 5k. Between now and Sunday 21 June this is your opportunity to get positive, get some exercise and help raise vital funds for Dorothy House and care in your community!
Why join our virtual 5k?
Part of the care we offer to all of our patients, families, carers and staff is maintaining a positive outlook through activity and mental wellbeing. Living well is an ethos we live by at Dorothy House and we want to make sure we are offering the chance to promote healthy living, mental wellbeing and positivity to everyone we care about. Our patients, their families and our supporters are always at the forefront of our minds.
COVID-19 is having a huge impact on our community. As you may know, the pandemic means we’ve shut all our shops and had to stop many fundraising activities. Funds from the local community that support over 70% of our care are fast drying up and the impact could be devastating.
Providing more community care
We’re providing an increased level of at-home care to those patients and families who cannot safely visit us. We’re also offering remote care to those patients who are so vulnerable they need to self-isolate.
More inpatients than ever before
In an unprecedented move to stand side-by-side with the NHS we’re opening eight new inpatient beds at our Winsley base. By caring for patients who would otherwise be in hospital, we’re helping take some pressure off the NHS.
We are stepping up and doing everything we can to offer different ways to get involved and continue to raise vital funds for patients but we cannot do this without you.

Why Big Breakfast?
A healthy body and mind are so important for wellbeing and breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Please make sure you take time out on 21 June to spend time with family and friends (virtually of course) to celebrate completing your 5k over your favourite breakfast! Taking a few moments out to reflect and sharing breakfast together is a great way to remember loved ones and celebrate Dorothy House and our community during these uncertain times.
By doing this you can raise vital funds for patients and families that need our help now. We would love to share your Big Breakfast pictures with our patients, families and staff at this difficult time. So please make sure you take a picture and send it in so we can share your amazing fundraising.
Is it easy to do and set up?
Did you know that a virtual 5k can be done anywhere at any time that suits you and you don’t even have to do it in one go! In fact you can help raise vital funds for Dorothy House and your community by logging in your steps, walks or runs online each day until you hit the magic 5k target. You can even do over it over a few weeks, just make sure you complete the full 5k by 21 June!
Did you know that 5k is an average of 6250 steps? We want to make sure that everyone can get involved, from the seasoned runner to the little ones – it can be as easy as a walk in the park and we are here to support you every step of the way!
Our care is for everyone in our community and we have chosen a 5k to ensure this is accessible for all ages, categories and abilities. Keeping active is so important and we want to offer you a chance to get some exercise in a safe and fun way while doing something amazing for your community.
The Big Breakfast 5k is a virtual event so is now free to enter here on GivePenny
How do I let people know I have done my 5k?
We have taken care of all of the technical stuff and all you have to do is set up your page on GivePenny and you can then link up to Strava (the free social-fitness tracking website/app) and start running, jogging or walking your way to achieving your total target of 5k. If you don’t have a fitness tracker or app, no problem, you can enter your kilometres manually on your page once you have set it up.
How do I raise money by doing the Big Breakfast 5k?
YOU can help us by making a donation to enter this event and then raise what you can in sponsorship.
Once you have set up your page supporters can help you raise funds by:
• Sponsoring you straight away with a one off gift
• Donating per kilometre you achieve
• Donating to put a song on your personalised Spotify playlist (so you have to exercise to their music!)
